Axon Automotive, a subsidiary of Far-UK Ltd, is part of the team that included Hyundai Motor Company, Hyosung and Lotte Chemical that won the prestigious JEC Europe 2015 Jury Prize for Innovation for its ‘carbon frame design for an automotive body’.
The company states that the carbon fibre frame, made out of Axontex, provides a 70% weight reduction over an equivalent steel structure, with a clear route to a cost effective, volume solution.
Axon Automotive designed the vehicle within four months and undertook preliminary Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on the design to demonstrate the capability of the frame to pass European crash requirements.
Dr Kevin Lindsey, Technical Director for Far-UK and Axon Automotive, said; “We are delighted to have won this award. It demonstrates the versatility of Axontex. Axontex is a braided carbon fibre manufacturing technology. We can produce unique shapes and structures with it. This allows cost effective manufacturing because it has low material waste”.
