Bristol Composites Institute Pioneers Future of Biobased and Sustainable Composites

Mechanical metamaterials made with sustainable bio-plastics and wood powder composite

Bristol Composites Institute is pioneering the future of biobased and sustainable composites with two prestigious fellowship awards worth over £3.5M.

The NEUROMETA project, led by Professor Fabrizio Scarpa, will develop new concepts for materials made with natural biobased and biological entities that are able to perform like an artificial neural network and adapt their capacity for bearing loads and functionalities to the surrounding environment. Meanwhile, Professor Stephen Eichhorn’s project, 'Realising Functional Cellulosic Bio-Based Composites', will aid the move from oil-based to more sustainable cellulose-based feedstocks for the transition to renewable composite materials.
