Supporting UK Composites

Fully Funded PhD Opportunity at the Automotive Composites Research Centre, WMG

Applications are invited for a PhD position to work on a project in automotive composites. The successful candidate will join WMG’s Automotive Composites Research Centre (ACRC). The centre focuses on the development of carbon fibre reinforced composite manufacturing technologies for high volume automotive applications, and the facility provides industrial partners with state-of the art, industrial scale composite processing equipment to carry out process development and demonstrations. Further details about ACRC can be found at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/about/facilities/acrc/

The PhD project will be part of a larger research programme within ACRC. The topic of the research can be flexible and tailored to the candidate’s interests and skills, but will need to fit into one of the ACRC’s research priority areas including:

  • Development of process simulation models for compression moulding of continuous fibre prepreg/discontinuous fibre sheet moulding compound (SMC)
  • Development of process monitoring strategies for compression moulding of SMC
  • Experimental investigation of the micro-structural of SMC components
  • Process characterisation and development for compression moulding of hybrid materials
  • Structural optimisation of prepreg and SMC hybrid components
  • High-rate testing and crash analysis for SMC

Successful candidate will have the opportunities to work directly with leading academics and industrial partners from the composites supply chain, especially leading UK automotive companies, such as JLR and Aston Martin, offering excellent career opportunities following graduation.
