Derby company Pentaxia has been awarded the top accolade of 'Best of British Engineering' at the annual SEMTA awards in London. SEMTA celebrates the talented individuals and companies whose commitment to skills development is making a significant difference not only in their workplace but in the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector as a whole.
Pentaxia, celebrated 10 years in business in 2018 and following rapid growth since its inception is now a major player in the manufacture of advanced composites such as carbon fibre. It moved to a new site in Alfreton Road, Derby last year and despite the move and considerable investment in facilities has continued its growth pattern of 30-40% each year. As a result of this a major effort into recruiting and training new staff at all levels has been necessary.
The SEMTA awards were held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel and hosted by Steph McGovern, best known for BBC Breakfast. Stephen and Julia Ollier, the owners of the company travelled to London with several of their young staff, as they had been nominated for the SME Investment in Skills award, which they also won.
Managing Director Stephen Ollier commented: “It was great to take some of our managers and staff down to London for the awards and we were delighted when we won the Investment in Skills Award, recognising our work in creating our own training operation to rapidly increase our workforce. As we will be needing up to fifty new staff in the next twelve months, we know the pool of experienced staff in the area is just not big enough to support our growth, so training is fundamental to our business. The last thing we expected however, was to win the top award of the night “Best of British Engineering”.
HR & Training Manager, Zoe Cooper added: “We have worked really hard to recruit new entrants of all ages to the industry and they come from a wide variety of other careers. We are able to provide comprehensive training in a very friendly environment and they are all permanent positions. Our company really values its staff and tries to give them a great working environment. And on the night we all got the chance to go up on stage and receive the award to celebrate this, something I will never forget!”
Stephen Ollier concluded: “It is a very uncertain time for the UK at the moment, but we should never forget that we have a fantastic manufacturing history, especially here in Derby and I am sure it will play a vital part in all our futures. Pentaxia manufactures world class products for aerospace, medical, motorsport and luxury automotive, it does not get more exciting than that!!”
