Known Exhibition Scams

Scam relating to a profile in exhibition showguides

We are seeing an increasing amount of exhibitors at shows relating to the composites industry being contacted by third party companies giving the impression that they are compiling the 'official' showguide working on behalf of event organisers (e.g. Easyfairs for the Advanced Engineering Show), with companies who sign up to these then receiving unexpected invoices and threatening phone calls for payment.

Organisations such as Event Fair, Data Verlag, Expo Guide (Mexico) and International Fairs Directory (Portugal) are the most widely known to be active in this area. Expo-Guide in particular have been active for a number of years surrounding the JEC World shows and Composites UK has recently seen instances of them getting in touch with exhibitors at Subcon, Composites Europe and Advanced/Composites Engineering.

Most commonly they will send a form relating to your 'free' listing in the showguide (which is not, in reality, affiliated with the show). This will likely have one or two details which are incorrect to prompt you to complete this and return it to them. In the small print it will reveal the actual cost of changing your listing for which you will receive an invoice.

The AEO has information on what to do if you fall victim of this here.

Should you be in any doubt contact your representative at the relevant exhibition directly before responding to any correspondence.

Other known scams

  • The offering of the show's attendee list for sale - organisers are bound by data protection laws and are not able to share this.
  • Companies acting as an 'official' accommodation provider.

Should you come across any other scams please let us know.
