University of Leeds

The School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds have a strong track record of delivering high-quality research to solve real world problems. We have a track record of delivering high-quality research to solve real world problems with particular expertise in: engineering systems and design; thermofluids, surfaces and interfaces; medical devices and regenerative medicine. The Advanced Composites Group at the School is dedicated to combining the aforementioned expertise to advancing research in the discovery, design, manufacturing, and recycling of high-performance polymer composites. Our focus extends from the foundational science of low-TRL blue-sky research to the practical applications at high TRL, encompassing both structural composites and multifunctional composites. Collaborating with internal and external partners. Our goal is to pioneer cutting-edge techniques, spanning modelling, synthesis, fabrication, manufacturing, and assembly/joining. Beyond research, we are committed to fostering composites education, contributing to the broader dissemination and application of our knowledge in academia and industry. The contacts of this group are Dr. Bing Zhang (b.zhang2@leeds.ac.uk) and Dr. Hamed Yazdani Nezhad (H.YazdaniNezhad@leeds.ac.uk)

University of Portsmouth – School of Mechanical and Design Engineering

The everyday tools you use – the phone in your pocket, the train on your morning commute, the car you drive – each relies on ambitious and innovative engineers. At the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering, we’re helping solve societal problems through creative and practical engineering solutions, combined with technical academic knowledge.

Our engineers make a positive difference locally and globally through their work and research – from using artificial intelligence to improve powered wheelchairs, to creating more efficient solar panels and lightweight manufacturing materials.

We have an open and welcoming culture, with experienced and supportive lecturers and experts, and a focus on practical skills and employability. We’ve got a proven track record of producing sought after graduates – 92% of our previous students are in work or further study 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey conducted in 2019).

University of Southampton – School of Engineering Sciences

The Advanced Composite Materials Facility is housed in a state-of-the-art laboratory within Chemistry at the University of Southampton. It incorporates thin film combinatorial synthetic chambers and high-throughput characterisation tools for the discovery and optimisation of solid state materials and devices. Surface analytical tools are available for understanding the interfaces of materials. A 150mm based cluster production tool is housed within the facility for the incorporation of the wider class of materials available using evaporation methods to be incorporated in thin film and micro-fabricated devices.

Uplift360

Uplift360 is developing chemical technologies to recycle advanced fibres and composite materials.

Our advanced recycling technologies can extract valuable high-performance materials from end-of-life products, e.g. wind turbines and aircraft. These are products that most companies must pay to dispose of with the vast majority ending up in landfill or incineration. Our technology gives our customers a new pathway where they can make money from waste – this is true circular economics in action.

V Carbon

V Carbon is an advanced materials technology company that has developed the first fully integrated carbon fibre (CF) circular economy for use in the aerospace, automotive, wind energy, and industrial sectors.

A highly innovative and integrated process chain has been developed to deliver advanced materials systems using high performance 2nd life CF. V Carbon’s technology driven approach is disruptive, it addresses the whole process chain from fibre and matrix recovery, to formulated products.

Our CF material systems retain their mechanical performance for high performance, high value applications across the relevant market segments and are easily integrated into existing manufacturing platforms.

Our solutions have been developed for the most demanding applications and provide a CO2 neutral and “zero waste” manufacturing platform for industry, previously not possible.
