Composites UK to Host its Second Parliamentary Reception

On 20th May 2024, Composites UK will host its second Parliamentary Reception on the Terrance Pavilion at the Houses of Parliament, London. The reception is being co-hosted by Sarah Jones MP, the Shadow Minister for Industry and Decarbonisation and The Rt Hon Margaret Beckett GBE MP.

This members-only event will strengthen the message to all political parties that composites are critical to delivery of the UK’s net-zero targets and thus start to influence development of the 2025-30 industrial strategy.

Chairman of Composites UK, Prof. Alan Banks said: “Since last year’s reception, we have made significant inroads regarding our input to government policy, with Composites UK representatives being invited to round table events and meetings with multiple MPs such as Greg Hands (Minister of State for Trade Policy), Gareth Thomas (Shadow Minister for International Traded), Nusrat Ghani (Minister of State for the Department of Business and Trade, as well as with one of our co-hosts, Sarah Jones.”

This year’s reception will see Composites UK promote the following messages to all parties within Government:

  • The industry’s continued commitment to the UK’s net-zero ambitions – there is no net-zero without composite materials.
  • The widening skills crisis and how Government policy can help attract new blood into the industry.
  • Accepting that critical on-shoring can be just as important as critical imports in protecting the UK economy if companies move from a ‘just-in-time’ model to a ‘just-in-case’ model and how the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will affect us all.

MPs will be sitting within Parliament on the date of the 2024 reception so a high participation rate from them is expected.

Alan concludes: “We hope to see as many member companies represented at the reception as possible and encourage them to also write to their local MPs to secure their participation.”
