Essential Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Training Returns with Composites UK and Decerna

The push towards a net-zero economy is making Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) an essential tool for assessing the carbon footprint of products and processes. However, many businesses still lack a clear understanding of how to conduct an LCA or utilise its outputs effectively. To bridge this knowledge gap, Composites UK is pleased to continue to offer its excellent one-day Introduction to LCA training course, which is applicable to many industries, not just composites.

Scheduled to take place on the 25th March 2025, at The Studio in Birmingham, this comprehensive one day course will be delivered by Decerna Limited and will provide participants with:

  • Hands-on training with OpenLCA software to calculate LCA values for products and processes.
  • An understanding of what LCA is—and what it isn’t.
  • Insights into the history of LCA and its relevant ISO standards.
  • An overview of key software tools and databases used in LCA.
  • Discussion on electricity grid impacts, impact categories, climate change considerations, and uncertainty in LCA results.

Malcolm Forsyth, Sustainability Manager at Composites UK, emphasised the importance of this training, by saying: “As sustainability continues to be a driving force in the composites sector, equipping businesses with LCA skills is crucial. This training will empower participants with practical knowledge to measure and reduce their environmental impact effectively.”

Tom Bradley, course leader and Director at Decerna, added: “Understanding LCA is more than just compliance – it’s about gaining insights that lead to more sustainable decision-making. Our course will provide attendees with the tools and confidence to integrate LCA into their business strategies.”

The training course is open to all to attend including both members and non-members of the Association. Although composite product examples are used, the content is highly relevant and applicable to all industries and therefore delegates from outside of the composites industry are also very welcome to attend.

Previous delegates at this course include AMRC, Andretti Racing, B&M Longworth, BAR Technologies, Collins Aerospace, ESC Engineering Services, Far-UK, Future Materials Group, GRP Solutions, Hambleside Danelaw, Jo Bird & Co, MPM, NEG, PRF Composite Materials, Reactive Components Ltd, Ru-bix Advanced Materials, Scott Bader, Technovative Solutions, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, University of Bristol, University of Edinburgh, and University of Warwick.
