Space Applications Architect (Composite Structures)

iCOMAT has developed a patented composite manufacturing technology that offers significant benefits when applied to products which need to be highly optimised for any of mass, reliability and production rate and cost.

Space is an important market for iCOMAT, we are currently working with ESA and MT Aerospace (Germany) on a technology applicable to space flight structures. In addition, iCOMAT is engaged and working with leading companies across Europe, the US, Japan and South Korea.

The benefits to space of iCOMAT’s technology is exemplified by launch vehicles where lift off mass comprises 90% fuel, 8% structure and 2% payload delivered to orbit. Work with the European Space Agency has demonstrated that iCOMATs technology can reduce structural mass by 25% and significantly reduce or eliminate defects, potentially doubling the mass delivered to orbit for the same or less cost. Other applications include propellant tanks, RF and optical reflectors and satellite panels.

iCOMAT has recently received private investment in excess of $20M to enable it to expand its team and will complete the fit out of our new 40,000 sq.ft. factory near Gloucester in towards the end of 2024.

iCOMAT is anticipating applications from composites professionals who want to work in the space industry or space professionals who want to introduce a significant new technology to their industry. Experience of structural design, analysis and test is essential, knowledge of automated composites manufacturing would be useful.

At iCOMAT you will be joining a team that blends the energy of a youthful start-up (spun out from the University of Bristol in 2019) with experienced engineers and managers in an organisation that values coaching and mentoring. You will be working closely with iCOMAT colleagues such as Dr Olivia Stodieck on the application of the technology, as well as collaborating with leading researchers such as Dr Rainer Groh in the academic sector.

What will you be doing? 🤔

  • Lead the application of iCOMAT’s technology in the space domain working with customers and colleagues to create and optimise products for space.
  • Act as the design authority for space bids and projects providing advice to colleagues in production and programme management.
  • Support the formulation of plans for product and technology development.

What do we need from you? 💪

  • Awareness of current and future programmes and the prospective contributions these could make to iCOMAT ‘s space customers’ success.
  • Engaging expertise across the iCOMAT team to enable customer success.
  • Candidates should have the capacity to travel globally to customers’ sites and attend at iCOMAT’s sites, some remote working is reasonable in this role.

We’ve completed multiple technology validation programmes (with the European Space Agency, Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover, BAE Systems, F1 Teams) and are in the process of executing on the first production opportunities with leading OEMs. We’re edging towards becoming a significant scale-up with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next 2-3 years and expand operations into Europe and the US! 📈
