Assessing Talent: Introducing Skills Test for Composite Technician Interviews

Recruiting for the composites industry can be challenging, especially when trying to assess candidates who are new to the field. Identifying the right individuals—those with the practical skills and potential to excel in composites—often requires more than just a CV and an interview. To address this, Access Composites has developed a new service: Skills Test for Interviews.

A New Approach to Recruitment
Our trade tests are specifically designed to evaluate candidates with no prior experience in composites. These tests focus on assessing key skills such as:
• Dexterity
• Attention to detail
• Ability to follow instructions
• Basic tool-handling, including scissors, knives, and measuring tools

These are the foundational abilities that form the building blocks for successful composite technicians. By putting candidates through practical, hands-on tasks, employers gain a clearer picture of whether a candidate has the potential to thrive in a composite environment.

Industry Collaboration and Proven Success
This service was developed in collaboration with Teledyne CML Composites, whose invaluable support helped shape the test design and implementation. Recently trialled during their recruitment process, the trade tests have already shown huge success, helping identify candidates with the right potential and mindset to join their team.

What’s Next?
While this service is already making an impact, the development doesn’t stop here. Recognising the need to cater to all levels of expertise, Access Composites is working on a new version of the trade test tailored for candidates who already have composites experience. This advanced test will focus on assessing specific skills relevant to experienced technicians, ensuring that businesses can make informed hiring decisions at all levels.
