During the UK Advanced Engineering 2026 show [4 & 5th Nov], CompoTech PLUS, spol. s r.o. (stand AA150) will be promoting the superior performance achievable with its fibre first approach to CFRP part design and production. The company specialises in innovative fibre placement and winding technologies, and the manufacture of high-performance epoxy carbon fibre (CF) composite components and large structures that offer design engineers an alternative to metal.
Fibre first laminate design and production
This unique fibre first approach is made possible due to CompoTech’s proprietary automated production machine capabilities and advanced winding technologies; their Automated Fibre Laying (AFL) 6-axis robotic system provides controlled true 0° orientation and tailored angle fibre placement.
Using CompoTech’s fibre first approach, a fibre reinforced laminate is designed around an application’s desired structural requirements, which are translated into a customised automated production programme. The approach combines their unique AFL placement and multi-axis cross-winding capabilities with proprietary integrated loop technology (ILT) joint designs for continuous load paths through structural connections that need no drilling or fixings, along with customised digital tools for laminate design and manufacturing control.
Together, these capabilities provide a controlled workflow from defined mechanical requirements to the final production-ready composite structure. The end result is new component designs in a carbon composite with each laminate layer tailored in orientation and thickness down to individual fibre tows, which has superior properties unachievable with conventional pultrusion or filament winding systems.
Maximising carbon fibre performance
In conventional filament winding, fibres are deposited along a helical path to maintain tension during manufacturing. As a result, continuous fibres cannot be placed at a true 0° orientation along the structural axis. This prevents using the full potential of a carbon fibre in components where primary loads act in the axial direction; not being laid at true 0° orientation results in reduced axial stiffness, lower bending rigidity, and a less efficient stiffness-to-weight ratio than the reinforcement material could theoretically provide.
The maximum possible performance of the finished CFRP structure is constrained by the manufacturing process, not the carbon fibre material. This manufacturing constraint is removed by CompoTech’s AFL system which is able to produce, with both pitch or PAN fibres, a true 0° fibre orientation laminate along the structural axis.
Unlocking new CFRP Applications
Examples of high-performance epoxy carbon parts which have been custom designed and manufactured for OEMs by CompoTech include: beams, shafts, spindles and tooling for production machines/lines; fighter jet ailerons; telescopic masts; silicon wafer metrology equipment; radio telescope strut arrays.
As industries continue to demand higher precision, greater efficiency, and improved dynamic performance, the ability to engineer every layer of a structure to unlock the full capability of advanced composites is a key advantage, made possible by CompoTech’s fibre first approach and production technologies.
